Sherry Collins Hogan
Sherry Collins Hogan is a versatile painter who works in acrylics, and watercolors. Her artwork is both abstract and figurative. Many of her paintings incorporate mixed media techniques. Her first attempts at mixed media were using a unique combination of color pencils and oil paints in her portraits. As she began her journey into abstraction, the idea of mixed media art surfaced again and developed into abstract works with elements of realism.
Always a working artist at heart, the necessities of life forced her into other jobs, but they always contained some form of artistic creativity. As a paraprofessional in the school system, she taught art in the classroom, as well as several "Artists in Residence" classes. Later Sherry worked at a picture frame shop and began an apprenticeship in the techniques of art restoration. During this period of highly detailed work, portraits became the main source of her artistic expression. Sherry went on to open a store where she offered picture framing, art supplies, and an art gallery. This was a turning point in her art, from the tight and detailed painting of art restoration and portraits to a more expressive form of art. While she still produces portraits in the technique she loves, she now works more abstractly. Portraits and abstract art seem to be her passion for now.
Graphic Design (commercial art) was Sherry's studies at Chattanooga State, but she quickly found it wasn’t fulfilling as an artist. There were life drawing classes and painting classes in this degree, and it soon became apparent that fine art was her path instead. Sherry went on to take several workshops and classes where she met an artist who became her teacher-mentor for a year. He was a contributing factor in helping with the decision to stay with fine art. Other than this short period Sherry has been a self-taught artist. She has been exploring, learning, and creating art ever since. Sherry has exhibited regionally, received awards, and accolades over the years for her work of arts. She has participated in shows, gallery exhibits as well as art festivals.
A look at Sherry’s art reveals a great deal about the shy and introverted artists' passions. She is fascinated by the unexpected and mysterious things of life. These show up in all her work. Her latest paintings reveal a strong desire to capture the quiet and inner strengths of women. Another series she explores the feather, and the meanings, different cultures, and religions place on them. You will also see a child-like approach to the subject matter at times, where fantasy and mysteries appear. While each piece of art speaks for itself, when seen in the context of the artist’s character and her chosen techniques, it clearly shows a degree of vitality and significance into the emotions behind her works.
